GHA Discovery is offering members the opportunity to purchase Discovery Dollars (aka D$). Through to the end of August, you will also be able to purchase these at a discount, with the discount varying depending on your status tier.
The discount on offer varies between 10% and 15%, as per the following scale:
- Silver Members: 10%
- Gold Members: 12%
- Platinum Members: 14%
- Titanium Members: 15%
Value of a D$
Under the GHA Discovery a program, a D$ is pegged to the US Dollar. As such one D$ has the same value as 1 US Dollar. With the discounts outlined above, a titanium member will be paying US85 cents for each D$. At the other end of the range, a base Silver member will be paying US90 cents per D$.
Buying D$
As with many points programs, points.com is used to facilitate the sale of D$. You can only purchase amounts from 10 D$, and then in increments of 10 D$.
Interestingly, the limits on the amount of D$ you can buy also varies based on your tier. The limits are as follows:
- Silver tier members are eligible to purchase a maximum of D$200 in a single transaction and a maximum of D$600 in a calendar year.
- Gold tier members are eligible to purchase a maximum of D$300 in a single transaction and a maximum of D$900 in a calendar year.
- Platinum tier members are eligible to purchase a maximum of D$400 in a single transaction and a maximum of D$1,200 in a calendar year.
- Titanium tier members are eligible to purchase a maximum of D$500 in a single transaction and a maximum of D$1,500 in a calendar year.
Any D$ you purchase will appear in your account within two business days. They will then be valid for 24 months from the date of issue.
Final Words
D$ have a fixed rate of 1 US Dollar. As a result, being able to buy them at a discount is similar to buying discounted gift vouchers. Thus, there can be some benefit in buying them at a discounted rate.
However, as with gift vouchers, they come with a set of terms and conditions. In the case of D$ it is worth keeping in mind that they have an expiry date 24 months after they are issued. On top of that, you can only use them for rates that are paid at the hotel, not for the cheaper prepaid rates that might be on offer.
Overall, they can help reduce the cost of yous stays at GHA,. This is especially the case if you are at the higher end of the discount range.
