BP to offer Qantas Points in new BP Rewards program

Qantas BP partnership

Qantas BP partnership

BP is set to switch alliances from Virgin Australia to Qantas with the introduction of a new BP Rewards program. The change will enable BP customers to Qantas Points in place of Velocity Points.

The new BP Rewards program will roll out in 2020, allowing Qantas Frequent Flyers to earn Qantas Points when purchasing fuel and spending in-store at BP outlets.

In addition, Qantas Business Rewards members will be able to earn points with their BP Plus fuel cards. Qantas are touting BP Fuel as their “exclusive fuel partner”, which leaves a question mark over the current Caltex Starcard offer.

Earning Qantas Points with BP Rewards

The new BP Rewards program will launch in early 2020. At that time the partnerships with Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Business Rewards will also commence.

Under the BP Rewards program, BP will offer Qantas Points on on fuel and eligible in-store purchases across participating BP retail sites.

The exact details have not been released. Having said that, it appears that members of BP Rewards will be able to choose Qantas Points as one of their points earning options. We will likely find out next year,

Velocity and BP

This of course leaves a question mark over the current partnership between Velocity and BP. While the end date has not been announced, it will likely occur around the time of the changes to the new program.

BP has offered Velocity Points since 2015. However, there is much to suggest that the relationship has been less than happy. In particular, it seems that BP was less than amused with Velocity partnering with flybuys. While a little indirect, this allowed Velocity members to earn Velocity Points from Coles Express, via flybuys.

Two years ago, it all ended up in court with the court finding that BP could terminate the relationship. At the time, BP was looking like it would move across to Qantas as part of a bigger move. This never came to pass, and BP continued to award Velocity Points.
